Today I spoke to a gentleman who approached and was interested in having some photographers shoot for a celebrity event he was involved with. After about 45 seconds of bull—-, he slipped in “I have no money to pay you,” and continued to tell us about how great his opportunity was. This wasn’t new, but he asked if I was interested. I kindly told him that I prefer to work commercially, but I knew someone who did a lot of event coverage. He asked what I did, who I’ve shot for, and proceeded to call me a narcissist when I told him, “I don’t work for free.” He then decided to name drop, bull—- some more, and drag on a pointless conversation that was clearly all about himself.
The moral I have for this story is as follows; Do NOT work for free. It is killing our industry and our art is being taken advantage of.
I’m a firm believer in standing up for what you believe in.
